This lecture will be a celebration of African scholarship. \nDate: Friday\, 23 January 2026 \nTime: 18:00 SAST \nVenue: New Lecture Theatre\, University Avenue South\,\nUpper Campus\, University of Cape Town \n \nRSVP NOW\n\n  \nAbout our Speaker:\nDr Lehana Thabane is Vice President of Research of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and St. Joseph’s Health System. He is also the Scientific Director of The Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton and a Professor in the Department of Health Research Methods\, Evidence\, and Impact (HEI) at McMaster University. \nDr Thabane has held numerous academic roles as a biostatistician. He led the Biostatistics Unit at St. Joe’s until his appointment to the Hospital’s leadership team. He remains actively engaged in healthcare research\, with over 82 000 citations as of October 2025. Dr Thabane was recently elected to the prestigious World Academy of Sciences. \nDr Thabane’s commitment\, passion and dedication to academic excellence and evidenced-based impact on patients\, as well as his extraordinary passion and aptitude for mentoring others\, beautifully aligns with the mission and values of St. Joe’s.

This lecture will be a celebration of African scholarship. \nTopic: Ukuba Ngumntu – Love\, Compassion\, Solidarity \nRSVP\nAbout our Speaker: \nPumla Gobodo-Madikizela\, the 2024 Templeton Prize Laureate\, is the South African National Research Foundation’s Research Chair in Violent Histories and Transgenerational Trauma and the Director of the Centre for the Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest (AVReQ) at Stellenbosch University. She has won several academic awards\, which include the Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship Award; the Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowship; an honorary Doctor of Theology from the Friedrich-Schiller University; and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Rhodes University. Awards for her critically acclaimed book A Human Being Died that Night\, which has been reprinted as a Mariner Classic\, are the Alan Paton Prize in South Africa\, and the Christopher Award in the United States. Her other books include Narrating our Healing: Perspectives on Healing Trauma as co-author\, Memory\, Narrative and Forgiveness: Perspectives on the Unfinished Journeys of the Past\, as co-editor; Breaking Intergenerational Cycles of Repetition: A Global Dialogue on Historical Trauma and Memory\, as editor; and editor of a collection of essays on Jewish-German dialogue\, History\, Trauma and Shame: Engaging the Past Through Second Generation Dialogue.
