Honouring his Legacy
Born in Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province of South Africa on January 28, 1967, Professor Bongani Mawethu Mayosi was an outstanding doctor, who rose rapidly through the ranks to become a top cardiologist (heart specialist) internationally recognised as a leading clinician and scientist.
Professor Mayosi was the first student at the University of Natal, now KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) to do a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) and he completed this and the MBChB by the age of 22 years graduating both degrees cum laude. He trained as a specialist at Groote Schuur Hospital and studied for his doctorate at the University of Oxford, UK. At the age of 38‚ he became the first black/brown person to Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town (“UCT”).
